Who wants to be an editorial writer?

I was reading this article about the supposed death of editorial newspaper writing, and I found myself wondering what I always end up wondering when I get conned into reading an opinion editorial: who are these people who want to be editorial writers? Who grows up wanting to be a journalist, not so you can conduct investigative interviews or split things open to see how they tick, but rather to pontificate on a subject after digesting second-hand AP news articles?

Of course, I’m being somewhat of a hypocrite. This blog post, in many ways, is an editorial. And book reviews and movie reviews–I read both often– are editorials of sorts. I guess my grievance is towards political opinion writers. There’s some kind of beltway mentality of it that stinks of upper middle class privilege.
