"It’s coldly telling you that you’re not the expert that you previously were..."

I wouldn't say it exactly like that, Simon. It's more like Google's telling you that they've come up with a new (and, according to them, better) way of ranking expertise, and that your new rankings are the result of that. It's harsh, I know, but Google never performs such updates maliciously; they're making a genuine effort to improve their index for users. Overall, they do a pretty good job of it. That's how they dominate the search market, after all. Still, such changes are painful for more than a few. If you don't believe me, just read around Webmaster World for awhile.

Although it's entirely possible that blogs in general are being devalued from one algorithmic shift to the next, I sincerely doubt they'll be removed from the main index, Nick. If anything, Google's move toward universal search is causing more blending of search results, not less. Google Blog Search is intended more as a specialized version of the main Google index, not a way to shunt blogs off to the side. Trust me, Google likes blogs far too much to do that. After all, that's why they bought Blogger.

I don't have the time to do the research right now, but i slightly remember just over two years ago that they were talking on twit about google blog search. As far as I remember Dvorak predicted that perhaps Google is trying to take blogs away from their main search results and consider non-blog content more relevant by default. Then in order to find stuff that is written on blog, one would use google blog search.
I vaguely remember someone on twit saying something like, blog search would give google the excuse to completely remove blogs from their search, cause there's blog search if you want to find blogs.

Anyway, i'll copy your list of links and will post them on my own blog, hopefully it helps for your ranking. And I encourage other readers to do the same.
