PR companies stalking journalists

Via Ed, I found this New York Times article about a Wired journalist who accidentally received a long detailed memo from a PR agency hired by Microsoft. The memo profiled the journalist extensively, outlining his inteviewing style, his writing method, and what directions his articles lean towards. It was an incredibly frank–sometimes hurtful– document that was never supposed to land in his inbox.

The journalist was about to do an article on Microsoft’s new blogging initiative, and the memo was supposed to inform the interview subjects how to act and what to expect.

This just shows how well PR agencies are able to analyze and infiltrate the media and shape public news. It’s fascinating.
