Interview with Brian Flemming

Simon Owens: Which conservative bloggers do you think create the most spin? And if you had to pick a conservative blogger to label a worthy adversary, which blogger would that be?

Brian Flemming: I used to make a daily habit of reading a few conservative blogs, but I don’t anymore. There’s only so much one can learn from watching people sell out their own principles.

Simon Owens: Al Gore seems to be appearing more and more in public recently: Why do you think this is?

Brian Flemming: Al Gore is a man for this hour. The biggest threat facing our republic at present is our president’s hunger for dictatorship powers. This threat is greater than any we face from terrorists. We can rebuild buildings. But nations can be utterly destroyed from within by the kind of contempt displayed by George W. Bush for the rule of law.

And if anyone has credibility to speak on the rule of law, it’s Al Gore. This is a man who had the presidency taken from him by a laughably justified and blatantly political Supreme Court ruling. And what did Al Gore do the instant that ruling was issued? He urged the nation to accept the ruling as final.

No politician alive has made a greater sacrifice for the rule of law than Al Gore. I think that’s partly why people are paying attention to him. They probably wish their president would display even one- tenth the respect for this nation’s values that Gore showed when he was put to the test in 2000.

Simon Owens: Do you think anything will actually come of the President’s recent brush with breaking the law, or that it will eventually be swept under the rug?

Brian Flemming: I think this largely depends on the American people. If they care whether their president respects the Constitution, they won’t stand for what he’s done, and he’ll be punished.

But it’s possible the Bush Administration could use its greatest talent — manipulating the American people with fear — to make citizens actually NOT care whether their president breaks the law. History is filled with similar examples of leaders creating and exploiting fear to gain enough power to ignore the law.

Simon Owens: What are the five blogs everyone should be reading (besides your own)?

Brian Flemming: I’m not sure there ARE five blogs for everyone. That’s the great things about blogs. My blog, for example, isn’t for everyone. I just write about the things that interest me. But here are five blogs I visit every day:

The Raving Atheist: For my money, the best daily commentary on the web, on any subject. Often hilarious, always cuts to the bone.

Eschaton . Of course.

Jesus’ General. I’m always interested in what the General is up to. He has an interesting life.

HD for Indies . Great blogging on the production side of indie film.

Lessig Blog. He doesn’t post enough, but I guess he has a busy life or something.
