Would William Buckley even recognize the National Review any more?

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on the history of the National Review, but I’ve seen claims that at some point it was some kind of haven for conservative intellectual thought (though the biased part of me remains skeptical of whether this was ever true). That being said, I’d like to think I’m being unbiased when I echo the thoughts of many that in recent years the publication has been an anti-intellectual sewer only a step above sites like Perez Hilton or The Free Republic. Glenn Greenwald details a recent episode — not solitary by any means — in which the publication just outright refused to print a correction in a timely manner.

You spend months giving Bill Ayers all the free press in the world…

…and then you go and bitch about it when he cashes in on the success? One thing can be said about Ayers, and it’s that he’s no media-whore Joe the Plumber who sought out the MSM’s teat. He avoided reporters’ interview requests. Without your constant guilt-by-association tactics that you played out until the election, nobody would even know who he is.

Major right wing bloggers not even trying to pretend they’re not racist anymore

With McCain so far down in the polls, right wing bloggers are facing a dilemma. For years they’ve had to speak in racial code speak, always hinting but never blatantly displaying the prejudicial undertones that knit and weave their way into so many of their posts. But now in the final days of the election, with so much at stake, they’ve realized they have no choice but to shed the sheep’s clothing, dig deep into the swirl of muck of racist thought, and fling it at the wall.

Here’s popular conservative blogger Atlas Shrugs writing an entire expose trying to claim that Obama’s father is Malcolm X.

And a quote from popular conservative blogger Ace of Spades this week: “Eh. Here’s the deal: He’s pretty much exactly the same kind of socialist race hustler as Jesse Jackson. Everyone swears he’s not Jesse Jackson. But he is.”

As I’ve pointed out before, these aren’t fringe bloggers or diarists, these are celebrities within the conservative sphere.

This is a stain that will stay with them for a long time to come. I’ll make sure of it.

Drudge publishes misleading headline

Here’s the major ALL BOLD headline from Drudge today, linking to a Chicago Public Radio interview that was conducted with Obama back in 2001:

drudge headline obama

If you actually listen to the interview, we have this quote from Obama in it:

“Maybe I am showing my bias here as a legislator as well as a law professor, but you know, I am not optimistic about bringing about major redistributive change through the courts,”

Nice try Drudge, keep digging.

More on conservative blogger “investigative journalism”

A few days ago I published the seven things you’d believe about Obama if you only read right wing blogs. The modest conservative blogger Jon Swift has compiled a detailed account of all the various “investigations” that the right wing blogosphere has conducted to expose the real Obama.

My laugh out loud moment of the day

It came after reading this from Power Line:

But the mainstream media–which is to say, most reporters and editors who work for “mainstream” news organizations–have no honor and are not interested in truth. They are, as Card says, “the public relations machine of the Democratic Party.” It’s time to accept that fact and move on. Our existing news organizations–the New York Times, the Associated Press, NBC, CNN, CBS, and so on–can’t be reformed, they can only be ignored. It is time for conservatives, libertarians, moderates, and normal citizens who are interested in straightforward reporting of the news to build their own news organizations in competition with the corrupt ones that now exist.

To get an idea of what these clowns consider “real journalism,” go and read this

Wow, Michelle Malkin is racist

Anyone who has read this blog for awhile knows I have a bottle-necking driving-by-a-car-wreck fascination with Michelle Malkin, and I often have stopped by her blog to gauge the talking points of the day for the right wing blogosphere; they’re pretty homogeneous in the topics they cover.

Malkin is perhaps best known for her book In Defense of Internment, in which she defends modern day racial profiling and the Japanese American internment by the United States Government during World War II. This book alone is enough to condemn her.

But over the last few months, her blog has dialed up the racism even more, for instance the relentless promotion of cherry-picked statistics like this one:

Nearly 300 illegal immigrants were convicted on driving-while-impaired charges and placed in North Carolina prisons in 2007.

Hispanics also account for 18 percent of drunken-driving arrests, while making up less than 7 percent of the state’s population, according to a study from the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center aired in WRAL’s documentary “Focal Point: Crossing the Line.”

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that all the Hispanics cited in the second paragraph aren’t necessarily the illegal immigrants cited in the first one, and vice versa. Probably a sizable proportion of that 18 percent are legal, and in this instance she is merely smearing an entire race to attack a microcosm of it.

And then you had blog posts of hers with titles like“An epidemic of black preacher bigotry” Funny how whenever she goes after white people (Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, any other white Democratic politician) she never labels it an an “epidemic of white people [insert attack].” This is a common tactic by those who are either subtly or blatantly racists. They tend to connect dots whenever there’s more than one black person engaging in some kind of unfavorable action, but when it’s white people there’s no need to tie it to their race.

And then finally we have this post today. Colin Powell, as everyone knows, has endorsed Obama for president, so it’s a given that the right wing blogosphere is going to spend the next two days going on a smear campaign against him. I hopped over to Malkin’s blog to see what the smear talking points would be, and I was met with this picture:

I think the message she’s sending is clear. Out of all the pictures she could have chosen, she chose this one. As with all subtle racism these days, you have to read between the lines: “Black Colin Powell is shilling for another black dude.”
