Anyone who has read this blog for awhile knows I have a bottle-necking driving-by-a-car-wreck fascination with Michelle Malkin, and I often have stopped by her blog to gauge the talking points of the day for the right wing blogosphere; they’re pretty homogeneous in the topics they cover.
Malkin is perhaps best known for her book In Defense of Internment, in which she defends modern day racial profiling and the Japanese American internment by the United States Government during World War II. This book alone is enough to condemn her.
But over the last few months, her blog has dialed up the racism even more, for instance the relentless promotion of cherry-picked statistics like this one:
Nearly 300 illegal immigrants were convicted on driving-while-impaired charges and placed in North Carolina prisons in 2007.
Hispanics also account for 18 percent of drunken-driving arrests, while making up less than 7 percent of the state’s population, according to a study from the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center aired in WRAL’s documentary “Focal Point: Crossing the Line.”
It doesn’t take a genius to realize that all the Hispanics cited in the second paragraph aren’t necessarily the illegal immigrants cited in the first one, and vice versa. Probably a sizable proportion of that 18 percent are legal, and in this instance she is merely smearing an entire race to attack a microcosm of it.
And then you had blog posts of hers with titles like“An epidemic of black preacher bigotry” Funny how whenever she goes after white people (Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, any other white Democratic politician) she never labels it an an “epidemic of white people [insert attack].” This is a common tactic by those who are either subtly or blatantly racists. They tend to connect dots whenever there’s more than one black person engaging in some kind of unfavorable action, but when it’s white people there’s no need to tie it to their race.
And then finally we have this post today. Colin Powell, as everyone knows, has endorsed Obama for president, so it’s a given that the right wing blogosphere is going to spend the next two days going on a smear campaign against him. I hopped over to Malkin’s blog to see what the smear talking points would be, and I was met with this picture:

I think the message she’s sending is clear. Out of all the pictures she could have chosen, she chose this one. As with all subtle racism these days, you have to read between the lines: “Black Colin Powell is shilling for another black dude.”
