An Open Letter to Carlos Mencia: Simply being racist isn’t that funny
Dearest Carlos,
Or should I just call you Ned? That is, after all, your real name. Anyway, I love the show. Never have I had so much fun repeatedly yelling, “Oh no he didn’t!” at the screen with such fervor. However, I have a few pointers that will guarantee an even more successful career.
I’m not sure you noticed, but before you go on every episode, you’re handed something. I can picture the scenario perfectly: right before the camera-man gave you the signal, a technician with a headset ran up to you and handed you this cyndrical, black object. After shooting him a quizical look, he no-doubt pantomimed holding it to his mouth, and told you that you were supposed to talk into it.
Ned — whoops, I mean Carlos –, that object he handed you was called a microphone. It was invented by Emile Berliner in 1876 and was designed to amplify (or record) a person’s voice. There is no need to scream your jokes at us until the veins in your head stick out. If you talk in a normal, calm voice, we’ll hear you just fine, I promise.

Sorry for that, I was just hoping to make you laugh.
Anyway, to continue. I couldn’t help but notice that you like to tell politically incorrect jokes. This was made plainly clear in the multitude of previews that Comedy Central ran on you, and your announcements at the beginning of each show. Therefore, at the end of every joke (Oh, you don’t have to use the word “bitch” every time to let us know you’ve hit your punchline, we’ll know you’re finished the joke after ten seconds of cricket-chirping silence) you don’t have to let us know that you’ve just “taken it too far.”
By the way, your usual fallback for being able to tell these jokes is the fact that you’re a Mexican, or rather, a “beaner” as you put it (I love your conclusion that because you’re a minority then nothing is out of bounds). It would really help though if you really were Mexican, rather than being half-German. I know that Comedy Central had a hard time finding a real Mexican to do the show, but don’t worry, they’re out there somewhere. Just ask Senator Bill Frist, the Mexicans will be destoying America any day now, and they’ve already taken all our jobs, might as well take one more.
Lastly, I want to end this letter by talking about a hero of yours: Dave Chappelle. I know you watched him every night, eagerly waiting your turn to be able to use the N-word and the B-word and the X-word (I’m just kidding Carlos, there is no X-word) on television. But you see, Chappelle had a key tactic that really added spice to his race jokes: A punchline. I know you were too busy yelling “Oh no you didn’t!” in order to notice, but being simply racist just isn’t that funny. If that were the case, every shitty southern racist comedian would get his own movie about being a health inspector. Oh wait…
Anyway, don’t want to keep you waiting. I’m sure you have a joke about a political event that is 6 weeks out of date to write (man, I thought the first 5,000 Dick Cheney gun jokes were funny until I heard yours!) so I’ll let you go. Keep up the good work!

* Many Europeans emigrated to America during the 18th & 19th centuries. Apparently what is NOT known is that just as many Europeans went to South America as did Ellis Island. Therefore, Latin Americans who are of German, Irish, Italian, Polish etc extraction, are JUST as Latin as those whose families came to the US during the same historical period are ethnic Americans in the US.
The difference is that most people raised in the US today never knew this and probably don’t believe it or ever studied this.
Mencia being of part-German extraction is NOT rare in Latin-America.

By whose definition? If it would be YOUR definition, then White people STILL rule and get to define and determine who is White, Black, Latin etc. (there are Legal statutes I can cite); ergo, White Dominance prevails.
Racism is prejudice plus the power to enforece such prejudices. Bigotry can be anyone’s human failings, but power to enforce it and determine “truth” by perception”, is still the domain of White/Euro-Americans.

Reviews and commentary are specifically written to influence others to either watch or don’t watch an entertainer. The “If you don’t like it, just don’t read/watch/listen to it,” is the most tired defense in the book.

the truth is, Carlos (or Ned if you prefer) has more than enough right to tell jokes from a mexican standpoint. his mother was mexican, he was raised in a mexican household environment….albeit a Los Angelos mexican environment. i’m no expert, but my feeling is that this guy has a pretty good insight on the mexican-american society (definitely more than you do).
sure, he may not tell the best jokes. in fact i just read that he was recently voted as the 12th worst comedian of all time (by Maxim magazine, big deal). i’ve seen his show myself several times, not really a big fan, but i admit i’ve found quite a bit of his material to be rather funny. most of all, i like his delivery. he’s highly animated, very upfront…over the top if you want. i can understand how you might not like such methods since i understand you prefer to look around sheepishly before you tell your racist jokes.

You like his delivery? You mean him screaming red faced into his microphone, with no comedic timing whatsoever? The delivery of his jokes is perhaps the worst thing about his comedy, just as bad as the rushed delivery of Colin Quin’s jokes. I’ve already said time after time, that I have no problem with race jokes. But saying something that’s not PC just to shock people into laughing isn’t funny, especially after the third joke. Carlos Mencia is just one big frat boy with the most shallow humor imaginable.
I like race humor, even race humor from white comics like Lisa Lampanelli. I wasn’t the one who created the stigma that race comics had to be a minority, Carlos is the one who feeds into that entire philosophy. He isn’t half-German, you lying twit. Yes – his father, who is Honduran, is of Germanic descent. Thus Carlos/Ned is half-Mexican, half-Honduran, with some distant Germanic ancestry … he was born in Honduras, to a family of 18 children, and grew up in East LA.
In short, implying that he “isn’t Mexican enough” is so far away from the truth that you ought to be embarrassed.

His fathers last name is Holness…..about as German as it gets (I am German)….His jokes lack punchlines, he recycles material, he has no delivery skills. To add to this the material he recycles has been done over and over for the past 20 years by every other average comedian. One important fact that this blog neglects is that Ned is blatantly making fun of people with mental disabilities and creating false stereotypes about them. It’s one thing to actually pick out a certain aspect of a specific disability and make fun of; it’s quite another to make it seem as if everyone who has mental handicaps has some sort of speech impediment mixed with turrets syndrome. Mencia makes me want to vomit on my t.v. everytime one of his commercials comes on.
Johnny Knoxville has made some movies with people with disabilities, but that was funny because it was plausibly true. And, Knoxville may be an idiot when it comes to things like willingly getting shot with tazers, but he actually developed freidnships with the people he was joking with/about. Mencia, on the other hand, sets decency back hundreds of years. If I was a producer of Mind of Ned or whatever, my next show would run like this: Ned walks out. Crowd boos. Crowd angerly picks up Ned and throws him off of a giant cliff. Satisfying thump. End.

1) Carlos’ mother’s name is Magdelena Mencia, and his father’s name is Roberto Holness. It is an old spanish tradition for a son to use his mother’s maiden name in addition to his father’s last name out of respect for his mother. By that tradition, Carlos’ full name is Ned Arnel Holness-Mencia. Since these types of names cause most Americans to go into convulsions and cause incredible pains in your as* whenever you need to give your name to anyone, most Latinos choose to shorten their name. He just chose the last name Mencia and chose a stage name of Carlos (gee, no one in Hollywood EVER uses a fake stage name, right Martin Sheen (Ramon Gerard Antonio Estevez )?
2) Although Carlos was born in Honduras, his mother Magdelena is Mexican, therefore he has a right to call himself a Mexican. If you don’t agree, then all of the people in American who now call themselves Irish or Italian (with no real Irish blood in their families for many generations) should stop calling themselves so;
3) Who cares if his father is of German decent (something I’ve not been able to find printed anywhere). He was born in Honduras and his mother is Mexican. He is Latino and I can assure you that no German will ever consider him to be a compatriot. I have more Irish blood in me than most caucasians who consider themselves Irish, yet my parents where born in Central American. I’m Latino-American. End of story.

You know there are so many problems with what has been said here. Personally I am a peaceful open minded person who doesn’t discriminate against anyone other than the people who discriminate. I don’t care if your fat tall blue green or orange weather u slept with 30 people at one time. To each his own. As long as someone isn’t pushing the life style they chose on you, what does it really matter? I personally am a fan of Carlos and here is why. Obviously some people who have posted here haven’t paid close attention or only heard what they wanted to. In regards to making fun of handicap or disabled people Carlos says it on almost every show hes not talking about people with true disabilities hes talking about that guy who pissed u off while driving down the street not paying attention almost causing a wreck, or the person who doesn’t like the life they live who has resources and options but refuses to use them expecting the world to cater to them. I can almost guarantee that you yourself feel the same way about these people. There are times when people and I mean all people even myself gets angry or frustrated with someone over something when we know very little or nothing about it and should take a step back and reevaluate the situation and he may do that at times too. However he isn’t referring to one particular person so we don’t really know. As far as the racist concern here yes he insults people based on there ethnicity however he also compliments based on ethnicity. I know when I post this people are going to make fun of my comments and get personal laughs from it but watch this……….WHO CARES. Does anything he says or anyone says for that matter really change your life???? I could see the problem if he were trying to start a massacre of certain ethnic groups, that could have potential serious consequences in other peoples lives. Carlos at the end of Many of his shows makes his heart and true feelings abundantly clear. He loves people he does what he does to make people laugh. As for those of you who just don’t like his comedy style that’s fine but Ill bet you like things that others don’t like. One final thought yes its true that Maxim Magazine voted Carlos the 12th worst comedian but the audience of Comedy Central (which I’m sure is a way larger number of total votes) Voted him the 2nd best. Opinions vary, just let them.
1. Saying that you’re not making fun of certain people but doing a crude imitation of REAL people with that problem to get a cheap laugh doesn’t make it ok and it doesn’t make it funny.
Try walking into the Special Olympics and make the same motions and then say “Hey I’m just using your horrible condition to enforce my lousy comedy by creating a buzz point that appeals to the lowest common denominator!”
2. Carlos can easily ignore everything he rants about and live his life unaffected by the fact that Muslim women wear veils but he feels compelled to broadcast stereotypes over the air.

I never said that people need to keep there opinions to themselves at all. I said we all want to practice freedom of speech obviously or this thread wouldn’t have been posted and he has that same right. Everyone has there flaws in what they do and say in life but the fact of the matter is in the end we all have to answer to a higher power. We are not on earth to judge others we are on earth because we are supposed to help others. Actually I only came across this iste because I was doin research for a paper i had to write for my Spanish class and my points were mostly directed to Simon on the fact that he is praising comics who do the exact same thing as Carlos but seems to have a problem with Carlos doing it because of ethnicity. And in my paper at school I did report that the film makes it look like he really did steal the stuff which he may have.I never said he didnt I wasnt there when the argument occured so I dont know any better than anyone else who wasnt there. Wow, finally someone else who feels the same way about Mencia as I do! I thought I was the only one. Yeah, simply saying a racial slur doesn’t make a joke. It’s like the audience laughs more out of surprise (“Hahaha, he said wetback!” than any real punchline. He has some funny moments, but he seems to think that his strongest jokes are the ones that have racial slurs in it. They’re not. He could be funny, but he’s too focused on being purposely politically incorrect.

Plus, some of yall may have forgotten why Dave Chappelle, abruptly dipped out on the show in the middle of taping. Chappelle is a genius. His mom is a college professor. I saw him in a serious interview once and he talked about how the writers on his show were OUT OF CONTROL! He said the racial jokes started to seem like they were laughing AT him and not WITH him! He got a clue and he bounced point blank. He wouldn’t sell his soul for any amount of money. After I saw that interview, I had the UTMOST respect for him.

I saw a few of Mencia’s clips online, I thought some of it was really funny, but when I started to watch his show and the majoritiy of his skits were about other minorities, I wondered who is writing this racist stuff? My concern is he feels its okay to continually bash minorities, but if he start in on whites and beef up the skits calling them crackers. I guaranteed it won’t be as humorous to his audience.
That’s one reason Dave Chappell didn’t come back because the producers of this show wanted to make fun of Blacks and other minorities. He would change the wording and the writers would rewrite it and put the N***ga jokes back in. Dave finally saw the Light!

Being a white person myself, I must now identify your sorry ass as a disgrace to our race. To be honest, I would normally be the last to judge someone but I must say that you really are an asshole. German, Mexican, Honduran, or whatever; Carlos Mencia simply goes up there and says it how it is. Being a southern Texas native I hang out with more beaners on a daily basis than you have ever seen in your life, and the reason that they like me is because I dont judge them the way everybody else does.
I treat them just like regular people and so they do the same for me (granted they are known to be a little violent towards others) but its not people like me…its assholes like you.

Let me tell you something, I dealt with his show because my friends liked it…until I saw a joke he did about white people and telling them to spank their kids. Being white myself, I had my ass whipped when I messed up growing up. So anyone who says, “white people gotta whip they kids” can kiss my white-whipped ass because I am a good person. Dave Chapelle’s a dick, that’s why his show was taken off. And if you dont like Mencia’s show, then dont fucking watch it!!!!!!!
I have seen Mencia’s show live a few times, flew to CA to see a live “mind of mencia” show being taped and even met him personally. He is one funny guy — and seems incredibly real – at least to me he is – now, to some of you, perhaps he sucks – and that is fine. What is extremely surprising to me is the degree to which some of you have gone to let everyone how you feel and also the depth of ill-feelings some of you seem to hold. Is it just me, or does seem to be a little extreme?
Here’s why I ask: I enjoy going to comedy clubs and there are some comedians I love, and some, well, not so much. But the thing is, if I dont like someone’s material, I walk away and think “gee, they were not that good because I didnt like the way he screamed, or told racist jokes or made fun of the handicap, or used someone else’s jokes….yada yada” and I just never pay to see them or watch them on TV again. Simple. No way would I let an entertainer have that much control of my feelings.
Just my thoughts…
I love the people that love Carlos Mencia find these blogs/sites and try to change our minds about our hatred for the ‘comedian’. Do you search for negative things about Mencia and try to save him? Its like you are all part of some club to keep this completely absurd show on the air.
The fact that there are 4 seasons so far of this show are unbelievable to me. I lose more faith in humanity at things like this. Along with movies like Delta Farce, Lisa Lampanelli, and the new seasons of MADtv (these are so awful). These things make me hate Comedy Central
I can tell you why Ned Holness sucks as a comedian without delving into the race/bigotry issue:
1) ANY comic whose shtick is largely predicated upon screaming and shouting his jokes/act/punchline is NOT a gifted comedian. That means I am looking at you too, Dane Cook.
2) Ned Holness steals material. He flat-out STEALS material. He counts on his audiences being too dull and clueless to have ever heard of Bill Hicks. He has stolen from Cosby. He has stolen from YouTube even. Google it.
Oh and that’s another thing Holness has in common with Dane Cook, who also steals material.
By the way, there is a HUGE difference between ‘being influenced by’ and flat-out stealing. HUGE difference. I won’t go into it here but ask any artist. If you know a comedian, you should especially ask them.
OK now I will get into the race issue. Some people out there – usually the less educated and the conservatives – pretend that there is no difference between Chapelle’s kind of race humor and Holness’ kind of race humor.
I’m here to tell you that it’s the difference between a psycho wielding a butcher knife and a talented surgeon doing his finest work with a scalpel. You might say, ‘what are you talking about, they are both carving things up with a knife!’ Now, how intelligent would THAT comment sound in describing the difference between the two?
Chapelle EXPLODED racial stereotypes with his racial humor; Holness EXPLOITS racial stereotypes and actually tries to make us feel comfortable with our prejudices. That’s why Holness insults Muslims and exploits the worst stereotypes of Arabs, and he thinks it’s all OK if he calls himself a beaner.
Have you ever been offended by someone who thought it was OK to tell a crude ‘nigger’ joke, just because everyone in the room is white? The boor who told that joke was someone just like Ned Holness.
Ned “Carlos Menstealia” was exposed for stealing other peoples joke. This joke “Ned” has no material. He covers it by yelling half the time and ending it with a “dee dee dee”.
When he does come up with jokes, it usually racist bs. He also claims to have a “large” penis. haha. Carlos “Ned” Mencia, I know for a fact you have a little 5″ penis. haha.
Im glad Im not the only one who feels this way about this guy. Im African American, and I feel that the blackface is a step too far. It saddens me to think that when he dons blackface he is catering to the hatred that many Mexican Americans have towards blacks.
I can agree with everyone saying that his jokes arent clever and dont really go anyway in saying something in the end that makes you think or laugh. For example, he does black people and we shuck and jive and eat chicken. He does hispanics and they are border-hopping orange selling immigrants. He does asians and they drive bad and cant pronounce the letter “L”. Since he goes nowhere with these jokes, you have to call them for what they are. Racism and Bigotry.
I miss Dave Chapelle. He could show Ned–Carlos, a thing or to about not pandering to all of the racists of the world.

Carlos isnt half German..his mom was from Mexico and his father from Honduras. He lived with his aunt and uncle (who were from mexico as well)in East L.A…plus if you dont like a comedian..why watch him and then whine about it? First of all, his dad might have a German last name, but he’s not German, the man is from Honduras, which take us to Carlos grandparents. Might be the typical story of people that fled Europe during World War 2 and their kids married with locals in South America, blah blah blah… there’s millions, and I mean MILLIONS like that over there. So your little “line” about his German last name doesn’t change the fact that Carlos is as South American as he can be. Great journalism there, dork.
The guy might recycle material, you might dislike him, but a man that drives a Jaguar XKR and has a mansion in L.A after coming from a middle class family in Honduras doesn’t reach that level by not being good at what he does and therefore quite successful, whether you want to admit it or not.
